http://www.google.com/news

Thanks to Stan GoldsteinThe Star-Ledger

Bruce Springsteen has performed “Prove It All Night” hundreds of times over the years, but Thursday night at the Estadi Olimpic in Barcelona, Spain, Bruce performed the 1978 introduction to “Prove It.”

What is the 1978 introduction? It’s beautiful piano work by Roy Bittan, joined by powerful drumming by Max Weinberg into intense guitar work by Bruce. All three then combined for this powerful into that runs for more than two minutes .

It was the intro to the song on 1978′s Darkness on the Edge of Town Tour and last night was the first time Bruce has played that intro in more than 32 years.

It was a solid 29-song, three-hour show for the first of back-to-back nights in Barcelona. Also played were the tour premieres of “You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)” and “Hungry Heart.”

“Talk to Me” was played for a sign request and this was the first show of the tour that the Apollo Medley (“The Way You Do the Things You Do” and “634-5789″) was not played. That’s welcome news to most fans here in the U.S. and probably to many in Europe too as it needed a break.

“Thunder Road” was played for the first time since the April 24 show in San Jose Calif., and “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A.” and “Bobby Jean” were played for the second straight show. “Rocky Ground” led off the encores after not being played in Las Palmas on Tuesday.

Set list:

Show began at 9:50 p.m. Barcelona time (six hours ahead of New Jersey)

Bruce and the band took the stage to Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” being played over the PA in tribute to Disco Queen who died on Thursday.

1. Badlands 2. We Take Care Of Our Own 3. Wrecking Ball 4. No Surrender 5. Death To My Hometown 6. My City Of Ruins 7. Out In The Street 8. Talk To Me 9. Jack Of All Trades 10. Youngstown 11. Murder Inc. 12. Johnny 99 13. You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) tour premiere) 14. She’s The One 15. Shackled & Drawn 16. Waiting On A Sunny Day 17. The Promised Land 18. The River 19. Prove It All Night (1978 version) 20. Hungry Heart (tour premiere) 21. The Rising 22. We Are Alive 23. Thunder Road

Encores:

24. Rocky Ground 25. Born In The USA 26. Born To Run 27. Bobby Jean 28. Dancing In The Dark 29. Tenth Avenue Freeze Out

Show over at 12:50 a.m.

http://www.google.com/news

Ok, here is the finished happy birthday wish for Bruce as he looks up at the empty sky, over Galveston Bay, and he will drive all night to find the dry lightning, he has never worked in a Factory like his dad, and he will see that Frankie, won’t fade away, but that janey won’t lose your heart, bought a new car and, gave it a name, he took a leap of faith, and wants to be the last to die, leaving on a Train and heading to the Land Of Hope And Dreams, Once there, Let’s Be Friends (Skin To Skin) because Life Itself, can Lift Me Up during the Light Of Day. though he was hoping at one time that Linda, Let Me Be The One at the Lion’s Den, cause he was Livin’ In The Future, while Living On The Edge Of The World. He was Living Proof, a Local Hero even though it was one Lonesome Day. His birthday was Long Time Comin and he didnt have to worry about the Long Walk Home, with Loose Change in his pocket, while he made sure that all of his Loose Ends, weren’t Lost In The Flood. He sure is one Lucky Man from one Lucky Town. He did a little Magic, while he is the Man At The Top, doing a Man’s Job as he builds his Mansion On The Hill, which will include Maria’s Bed, along with one for Mary Lou, Mary Queen Of Arkansas and it will be called Mary’s Place, which is also located off of the Matamoros Banks. He is hoping to have Meeting Across The River, to discuss his Missing friend, who may have been dealt with by Murder Incorporated. Bruce said He woke up to My Beautiful Reward, and mentioned that My Best Was Never Good Enough when he walked through My City Of Ruins, which included My Father’s House, which is also My Hometown. He promised Patty that My Love Will Not Let You Down because she said he is My Lover Man and every day when he wakes up to My Lucky Day. Bruce decided to go Nebraska after he sang his New York City Serenade last Night, but he knew that None But The Brave, will always make sure that there would be No Surrender, because he is never a Nothing Man. he took One Step Up and the store was Open All Night. He was also Out In The Street, while he was Outlaw Pete, riding his horse Over The Rise into Paradise, which included Paradise By The “C”, He was never Part Man, Part Monkey, as he drove his Pink Cadillac, driving it Point Blank, past Pony Boy, as he had to Prove It All Night, to the Queen of the Supermarket. He went Racing In The Street listening for Radio Nowhere, he asked if he could Raise Your Hand and try his hand at being a Ramrod, a Real Man in the Real World, looking for a Reason To Believe, with his Red Headed Woman, looking to Rendezvous in Reno, where there will be a lot of Restless Nights, hoping that Ricky Wants A Man Of Her Own, for those Rockaway The Days, after a big Roll Of The Dice that will get Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) to then play some Roulette. His Sad Eyes, will be looking over towards Santa Ana while singing a Seaside Bar Song, about his Secret Garden, sowing some Seeds, as the Seven Angels let him know that She’s The One, Sherry Darling, who Shut Out The Light once he got home on his Silver Palomino, after hanging with the Sinaloa Cowboys, who are all So Young And In Love,. It sure was Something in the Night, that propelled him past the Soul Driver who is one of the Souls Of The Departed, and not one of the Spare Parts, but more like a Spirit In The Night, where he can Stand On It, if he would be stopped by his friend the State Trooper, while driving a Stolen Car, because he won’t be able to do any Straight Time, through the summers Streets Of Fire, which are in the Streets Of Philadelphia, to know one’s Surprise, Surprise, we all have to Take ‘Em As They Come, so there won’t be a Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, singing Terry’s Song, who is now The Angel, of The Big Muddy, hoping for The Big Payback, dancing The E Street Shuffle, that has given him The Fever. Maybe that will be The Fuse, in finding The Ghost Of Tom Joad, who was The Hitter and one of The Honeymooners, heading for The Last Carnival along The Line, hoping not to be The Long Goodbye, but The New Timer. There is always The Price You Pay for The Promise, of The Promised Land, all along The Rising of The River that he hopes won’t be caught up by The Ties That Bind, but more The Wish that The Wrestler, would be able to overcome This Hard Land, which is not to be confused with This Land is Your Land, which is all part of This Life all along Thunder Road, where he has always been a Thundercrack, where Tomorrow Never Knows, of he will be Tougher Than The Rest, but not Trapped by the Trouble In Paradise, going to the other side of The Trouble River, in one of his Used Cars, through the Tunnel Of Love, which could have been a TV Movie, where Two Faces, become Two For The Road and Two Hearts on Valentine’s Day as he hopes to get to Viva Las Vegas, where the Wages Of Sin are never Waitin’ On A Sunny Day, the place where you can Walk Like A Man, not be concerned with War, because it is all about What Love Can Do, When The Lights Go Out, When You Need Me, When You’re Alone, after spending the night Where The Bands Are, where Wild Billy’s Circus Story, is there With Every Wish, Working on a Dream, while Working On The Highway, though he was Worlds Apart from that Wreck On The Highway, he had to remember that You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch), but hopefully it won’t be long before You’ll Be Comin’ Down, because in my heart You’re Missing, when your away from Youngstown, where Ai was always Your Own Worst Enemy, when it came to Zero And Blind Terry. Happy Birthday Bruce!

The evening of May 9, 1974, is legendary in the annals of rock ’n’ roll. It was the night the little-known Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band opened for Bonnie Raitt at Harvard Square Theater, dazzling the critic Jon Landau into writing “I saw rock & roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen’’ in the local alternative weekly The Real Paper. Now a tape from that night — one of the most revered in rock history — has emerged as a museum object 36 years after the storied event.

The tape, never available for public hearing, is included in the Springsteen exhibit “From Asbury Park to the Promised Land’’ at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, on display through summer. It has been digitalized and streams to a single listening station, where two people at a time can listen to it on headphones. It is not available on the museum’s website, nor can a copy be purchased in the museum store.

The sound has some rough patches, and there are no seats for relaxing. But the radical effect of the music on the audience then (this writer was there and can attest to that) can still be felt. The band aims for the mystically transcendent one minute and party-hearty, sax-fueled retro-rock raucousness the next, keeping everyone off guard. Springsteen was in Cambridge to promote his second album, “The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle.’’

The idea for an exhibit centering on Springsteen’s career came about because the Hall of Fame’s induction ceremonies were going to be in Cleveland last year and chief curator Jim Henke wanted a big show to accompany it. He approached Springsteen, who had been inducted in 1999. Springsteen agreed and provided items ranging from his “Born to Run’’ Fender Esquire guitar to his favorite songwriting table.

The exhibit drew so well in 2009 — 423,000 visitors — that it has been extended into this summer, with newer artifacts added, including the jacket he wore to President Obama’s inauguration, his 2009 Kennedy Center award, and the Golden Globe he won for “The Wrestler.’’ But it is the Harvard Square tape that remains one of the most fascinating parts of the exhibit, just as that night itself remains an enduring, pivotal moment in the Boss’s career.

“It was my idea to include it, because that show is so famous because of Landau’s review,’’ Henke says. “So we contacted [Springsteen’s organization], and they had a tape of the songs played there. He and the E Street Band were a great live band, and that does come through in those tracks.’’

Springsteen’s band at the time of the Harvard Square booking featured a pianist with strong jazz and classical leanings, David Sancious. (He left in August 1974.) It is Sancious who makes the band’s first impression so strong, opening with a long, melancholy, and ruminative solo on “New York City Serenade.’’ It slowly leads into Springsteen’s yearningly searching vocal, with the impressionistic, romanticized lyrics that seem part Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row’’ and part Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.’’ The song was aiming for theatrical grandeur and also reverent intimacy, and the effect it has on hushing an audience can still be felt today.

But then he moves away from that territory on “Spirit in the Night,’’ a song that still has its cryptically spooky Dylanesque lyrics but also builds into a more traditional soul shout-out, thanks to Clarence Clemons’s saxophone solo. The band then goes into soul-oldies heaven with a cover of “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman,’’ which had been a 1962 girl-group hit. On these three songs and five others, it’s evident that Springsteen and his tightly rehearsed ensemble were trying simultaneously to draw from the music’s past and to create a future. This is the night they came to be forever recognized for it.

It took luck for Springsteen’s audio engineer, Toby Scott, to find the tape. He lives in northwest Montana and met a Boston emigre, musician/retired music teacher Michael Atherton, at an open-mike night at a bar in the town of Whitefish. Atherton, a resident of Trego, said he had a tape for him — Springsteen at Harvard Square Theatre, 1974. He had made it himself, lugging in a professional-model cassette recorder with external microphone and taping the show from a seat in the back. At the time, Atherton was a natural-foods baker (with his wife) as well as a musician. “I saw every concert we could afford to — of course, we were broke most of the time,’’ Atherton recalls. “I don’t even know how I knew who Bruce Springsteen was. When we baked, we listened to WBCN all the time and even took doughnuts over to them because we thought they were so cool. So maybe that was it.’’

Smuggling the bulky recorder into the show turned out to be easy, because he was prepared. “My father was a news photographer for 40 years and instilled in me a rule to always look like you know what you’re doing when confronted with any possible security situation,’’ he says. “So I put it under my peacoat, where it probably looked like I was pregnant. Then I put it in my lap and held the microphone up in the air.’’ He also recorded a bit of Raitt’s headlining act, before the batteries gave out.

Over the years — as Atherton and his wife moved to first New Hampshire and then Montana, he has made a few copies for friends — which may have something to do with the bootleg copies that some Internet sites say exist. But he has only played it once for himself. “It was every bit as good as I remembered it,’’ he says. “It was the greatest band concert I’ve ever seen — completely together, completely refined, the dramatic intent clear from beginning to end.’’

Actually, Landau — who went on to become Springsteen’s manager — didn’t see the performance that can now be heard at the hall of fame. He went to the second show that night, when the set list not only was somewhat changed — Springsteen opened with “The E Street Shuffle’’ — but showcased a new song, “Born to Run.’’ Landau had seen Springsteen at a Cambridge club called Charlie’s Place just a month earlier.

Landau declined comment for this story, but the music writer Dave Marsh — Landau’s editor at the time — recalls The Real Paper review well. “It was playing off ‘A Christmas Carol’ — it was Dickensian in the way he talks about rock ’n’ roll’s past, present, and future. It always gets quoted as being in a prophetic voice, but it wasn’t.’’

Marsh went on to write two Springsteen biographies and “Bruce Springsteen on Tour: 1968-2005.’’ While he and Landau had seen Springsteen earlier in a small Cambridge club, Marsh didn’t make the Harvard Square show. “This is a horrible thing to say,’’ he says. “I had a ticket but was sick.’’

About three months ago, I saw Tramps Like Us, an awesome Bruce Springsteen cover band, recreate the legendary Sept. 19, 1978 show from the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, at B.B. Kings in New York City.
It was a great night of nostalgia and music and B.B. Kings was sold out.
Following in those footsteps, Tramps Like Us is coming back to B.B. Kings on Saturday, May 15 to recreate another legendary Springsteen show – the Aug. 15, 1975 early show from the Bottom Line in New York City.
That show is known as Bruce and the E Street Band’s “breakthrough” show. It was broadcast live on the radio (WNEW FM in New York City was one of the stations) ) and pretty much let the world know about this tremendous talent 10 days before “Born To Run” was released.
In additon to the great music, the May 15th show will also include a special introduction and Q&A session by Mike Appel to set up the scene – Springsteen’s former manager & producer. Tramps Like Us will then perform all songs and versions in order as was done that
night.

Also there will be a special auction for two autographed copies of Eric Meola’s photography book, “Born to Run: The Unseen Photos.” The books are signed on the title page Springsteen and Clarence Clemons. The auction will take prior to Tramps Like Us playing and all proceeds go to support the The NJ Food Bank. Meola will also be at BB King’s to sign copies of his book.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and Tramps Like Us is scheduled to start playing at 7:45 p.m.
The setlist from the Aug. 15, 1975 Bottom Line show (it was the early show, Bruce played two shows that night as part of a five-night, 10-show stand):

Tenth AvenueFreeze-Out
Spirit In the Night
Then She Kissed Me
Grown’ Up
Saint in the City
E Street Shuffle
Every Time You Walk in the Room
She’s The One
Born to Run
Thunder Road
Kitty’s Back
Rosalita
Fourth of July Asbury Park (Sandy)
Quarter to Three

Mark Salore, the lead singer of Tramps Like Us, tells me the band will also play much more on May 15 once the set from the Bottom Line is complete.

http://www.google.com/news

Rolling Stone reports that singer/ all-around rock ‘n roll badass Bruce Springsteen will be releasing a DVD and Blu-ray of his monolithic, 27-song performance at London’s Hard Rock Calling festival that took place on June 28th, 2009. London Calling: Live in Hyde Park will be released on June 22nd, and, if you couldn’t tell by the title, the set features a burning version of the Clash’s “London Calling.”

The DVD, which covers musical ground from the classic Born to Run all the way down to the Boss’ latest, Working on a Dream, features a host of covers beyond the clash—the nearly three-hour concert also displayed Springsteen and the E-Street Band taking on songs by Jimmy Cliff, the Young Rascals, Eddie Floyd, and Stephen Foster’s 1854 tune, “Hard Times (Come Again No More).”

The set also features a guest spot from The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon on the classic Springsteen track, “No Surrender.” The disc will also contain two bonus features: “Wrecking Ball” from Springsteen’s last Meadowlands concert and “The River” from the E-Street Band’s 2009 Glastonbury performance.

The concert’s entirety was filmed in HD—expect your eyes to be popping out of your head. And if you’re eyes are rolling right now at that hyperbole, you keep your filthy mouth shut. The Boss fights for you. And c’mon—the man wrote “Thunder Road”!

What do you think? Will you pick up the new DVD/ Blu-ray?

Well, there’s more than Springsteen’s cover of The Clash’s “London Calling” on his forthcoming DVD, London Calling: Live in Hyde Park, but the song was neat enough to make it into the album’s title. It’s in stores June 22. Until then, you’ll just have to remind yourself just why every punk rocker on the planet suddenly wants to pretend he grew up listening to Nebraska. This ought to explain everything:

Bruce Springsteen fans are buzzing today about a DVD coming out from one of the shows on last year’s Working on a Dream Tour. On June 22, “London Calling: Live in Hyde Park ” will be released on one Blu-Ray disc and as a two DVD set.

Captured in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival on June 28, 2009 in HD, the 163-minute film documents 26 tracks of live Springsteen and the E Street Band.

The track list:

1. London Calling
2. Badlands
3. Night
4. She’s the One
5. Outlaw Pete
6. Out in the Street
7. Working on a Dream
8. Seeds
9. Johnny 99
10. Youngstown
11. Good Lovin’
12. Bobby Jean
13. Trapped
14. No Surrender
15. Waiting on a Sunny Day
16. Promised Land
17. Racing in the Street
18. Radio Nowhere
19. Lonesome Day
20. The Rising
21. Born to Run
22. Hard Times (Come Again No More)
23. Jungleland
24. American Land
25. Glory Days
26. Dancing in the Dark
27. Music under end credit sequence: Raise Your Hand

BONUS MATERIAL:
The River: Glastonbury Festival, 2009
Wrecking Ball: Giants Stadium, 2009

Springsteen fans on the internet board Backstreets are quick to nte that “Rosalita” which was performed that day, has not been included in this setlist.

Many fans have seen some of this footage already, as six songs (London Calling, Radio Nowhere, Lonesome Day, Born to Run, the missing Rosalita and Jungleland) were televised on VH1 last summer. The footage is great, really captures well Bruce and the band in a huge festival setting.

Also, I’ve seen the bonus clip of “The River” from the 2009 Glastonbury Festival and that is spectacular. Bruce literally has smoke coming off the top of his head while singing because of the cooler weather that evening.

Maybe not the greatest setlist from a 2009 show (“Bobby Jean” was one of the sign requests that night, ugh!) but there’s some great songs in that lineup and it’s always nice to have an official pro-shot DVD release.

http://www.google.com/news

During the Super Bowl halftime show, Bruce Springsteen shocked the world by sliding across the stage and giving the camera-and millions of people around the country-a crotch close-up.

Those watching

familiar with Springsteen’s antics weren’t surprised; he loves to go crazy during live shows, and the move is vintage Springsteen. My friends all thought it was ridiculous; I think it was inspiring.

I’ve been listening to Springsteen since before I was born. My parents attribute the ear tags I was born with to the Lexington concert they were at in ’88. According to the theory, the show was so loud, the music so jammin’, the Boss so awesome that my fetal self produced little flaps of skin to drown out the noise. Luckily, my parents chose to have them removed.

Since then, I’ve been to five concerts. Six, if you count the prenatal one. I like to imagine my womb-laden self dancing along to “Thunder Road,” ready to break out of that “town full of losers” and into the world.

I keep coming back because the shows are always different. At 59, Springsteen continues to give concerts famous for being high-decibel, full of energy, and packed with surprise. You don’t even recognize songs you’ve grown up with as he plays them solo with an acoustic guitar and harmonica. He leans into the crowd and lets the pit push him back up. By the time he’s half an hour in, sweat’s flying everywhere. He loves what he’s doing and you love him for it.

His joy is so effusive, the happiness he feels while making music so obvious, it’s infective. Although his songs refer to him working all kinds of odd jobs, there’s only one thing I can imagine him doing.

I’m sure Springsteen has had his fair share of setbacks in his music, but he still loves what he does and I doubt he could live without it. It’s that passion that makes someone an artist. He found his place, and every song of every concert is an affirmation that he has found his place in the world.

Whenever I stop to wonder if I’m doing what I should with my life, I think about Springsteen putting his whole heart into a show. So many people can’t stand their careers. Most everyone has a secret passion they always wish they had pursued.

For me, it’s acting. I spent my freshman year at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, majoring in economics and math. I enjoyed those subjects. But I didn’t live for them; they didn’t drive me to work for fifteen hours a day at difficult, often frustrating work.

I switched schools and majors. I learned that I can do a lot of things; a few of them I can do really well. But there’s only one thing that makes my eyes light up. There’s only one thing I want to do forever. I’ve found what I love.

Bruce Springsteen and I have very little in common. He’s a songwriter and guitarist; I can hardly play the recorder. He is the smoothest of the smooth; my brother gives me crap for running into walls. His nickname is the boss; my friends call me “Nat the Homeless Ferret.” You get the idea.

But in this one regard, I recognize part of myself every time I see Springsteen perform. The part that has something to say, that makes me get up in the morning.

I’m glad Springsteen decided to play the Super Bowl. It gave people who’ve never seen him a chance to experience his joy. Take a look at a clip of the halftime show. Whatever you love, I hope you’re inspired to pursue your passion.
